UnitedLex To Host Three Panels on “The New Normal” Facing the Legal Industry at LegalTech
USA/Canada News

UnitedLex logoUnitedLex, a global, full-service provider of technology-powered legal and business services, will be hosting three insightful panels at LegalTech New York designed to illuminate the “new normal” – economic realities and trends that are impacting the legal industry.

The panels, focusing on cybersecurity, slashing eDiscovery costs and ways legal departments can drive strategic value, will feature senior legal counsel from some of America’s top law firms and corporations, including GE, JPMorgan Chase, Deutsche Bank, Freddie Mac, Oppenheimer Funds and more.

All three sessions will be held on Wednesday, February 3 in the Mercury Ballroom at the New York Hilton (1335 Avenue of the Americas, NYC) and all are eligible for CLE credit. UnitedLex executives will also be available at the show (Booth# 2104) to talk about the results of its recent Law Department Operations survey; provide updates on its innovative Legal Residency Program; and discuss M&A and other business trends they are seeing in the marketplace. The panels and panelists include:

  1. Transforming Your Legal Department into a Strategic Value Center (10:30am – 11:45am)
As corporations continue their efforts to cut costs and improve profitability, traditional “cost-centers” like legal departments are being forced to re-examine their operations and come up with new ways to generate revenue – keeping in line with other business units. This panel will explore several strategies that legal departments can use to become more profitable, and leveraging the right technologies to make litigation more efficient and cost-effective. Panelists include:
    • Nancy Jessen, Senior Vice President, Legal Business Solutions, UnitedLex (Moderator)
    • Adam Storch, Legal, Compliance & Public Affairs, Marsh & McLennan Companies, Inc.
    • Joshua Petty, Vice President and Deputy General Counsel, Booz Allen
    • Ari Gabinet, Executive Vice President, General Counsel, Oppenheimer Funds, Inc.
  2. Slashing E-Discovery Costs: Innovative Approaches and New Alternative Fee Arrangements (2:00pm – 3:25pm)
In today’s era of cost-cutting, many corporations have begun internalizing key functions that they used to outsource to law firms and service providers. One main area that is ripe for reduction is e-discovery – the largest single litigation cost. This panel will showcase how law firms and service providers can dramatically reduce e-discovery costs and, at the same time, accelerate and improve trial preparedness for their clients, without being forced to in-source this traditionally outsourced function. Panelists include:
    • Dave Deppe, President, UnitedLex (Moderator)
    • Farrah Pepper, Executive Counsel – Discovery, GE
    • Christine Hasiotis, Executive Counsel & Director, Legal Support Solutions, Electric Insurance Company
    • Brian Chebli, Vice President, Assistant General Counsel, JPMorgan Chase & Co.
    • Gregory Witczak, Vice President, Deutche Bank
    • Anthony S. Lowe, Managing Attorney Litigation Operations, Associate General Counsel, Freddie Mac
  3. Cyber Security: GCs on the Front Lines (3:45pm – 5:00pm)
In matters of cyber security, the “new normal” is that it is no longer a matter of if a breach will occur, but when. The legal and reputational fallout from the mega-breaches suffered by major corporations over the last few years reveal that IT and Legal were worlds apart in terms of preparing for a breach, formulating an immediate and effective response, and dealing with the many ramifications in the aftermath. Since then, the domains of CIOs, CISOs and General Counsel (GC) have gravitated towards one another but they are still not completely in synch – and they need to be in order to protect the organization. This panel will educate lawyers on how to better align, communicate and collaborate with IT on a comprehensive risk assessment and incident response plan before a breach occurs; secure executive buy-in and budget for appropriate security technologies; assess and prioritize specific risk categories to inform spending decisions; and more. Panelists include:
    • Jason Straight, Senior Vice President & Chief Privacy Officer, UnitedLex (Moderator)
    • Tim Greene, Senior Editor, Network World
    • Todd Ruback, Chief Privacy Officer & V.P. Legal Affairs, Ghostery
    • Edward McAndrew, Partner, Ballard Spahr LLP
