Leading law firm operations consultancy, Mattern, announces the company has launched the 2023 Information Governance Survey (“IG Survey”) to provide law firms first-of-kind data surrounding industry-wide practices of data retention as well as insights regarding common roadblocks to the development and implementation of information governance (IG) policy.
The IG Survey was developed by Mattern’s leading team of certified information governance professionals (IGPs) and is open today through September 6th. Learn more and participate here.
As data volumes continue to grow exponentially and regulation becomes increasingly complex, law firms consistently place the management and security of their data – including data privacy, regulation and compliance issues--as the number one issue facing their businesses. As firms have been sluggish in response, clients have become more likely than ever to include strict stipulations in Outside Counsel Guidelines (OCG) regarding how they want their data to be stored, accessed, and disposed of including the ability to audit what measures their outside counsel has committed to support.
Mattern’s IGP consultants developed the 2023 Mattern Information Governance Survey in response to the lack of insights firms possess, industry-wide, regarding retention policies. Data retention, email in particular, is one of the most contested areas of IG, and firms by and large have very little to no visibility into the practices of their peer firms. This potent combination often results in the pivotal stall-point for many firms to implement policies that are in their firms’ best business interests as well as their clients, in particular as it relates to compliance with OCGs.
Mattern Consultant, Nathan Curtis, IGP, comments: “The survey is designed to provide insight into how peer firms have tackled roadblock issues that commonly stand in the way of deploying sound IG principles. Firms of all sizes are struggling to bridge the gap between OCGs on this topic and lawyer modus operandi to keep everything forever. Possessing intel on real world policies implemented by others in the industry will be invaluable for firms in making the leap from IG theory to IG practice.”
Company President, Rob Mattern, adds, “We are proud to deliver this first-of-kind survey that specifically focuses on the IG practices of law firms to help them better understand their position in the market. We look forward to providing invaluable insights here and look forward to helping our clients make great business decisions as a result.”
