Today at ILTACON 2016, LTC4 announced the official release to its members of its much anticipated eDiscovery/eDisclosure Core Competency (ECC) Learning Plan following the peer review announced at LegalTech earlier in the year.
Designed to assess legal professionals’ understanding of eDiscovery, the LTC4 ECC Learning Plan is a competency curriculum created by the LTC4 ECC Learning Pod, a team of U.S. and U.K. based eDiscovery thought leaders.
Inspired by the globally accepted eDiscovery framework of the Electronic Discovery Reference Model (EDRM), the ECC Learning plan provides a practical, workflow-based scenario approach to assess knowledge of eDiscovery/eDisclosure areas including Identification, Preservation, Collection, Processing, Review, Analysis and Production.
The ECC Learning Plan assesses two standards of competency:

Beuth, Information Systems Trainer at FordHarrison, noted: “We are incredibly proud to unveil the ECC Learning plan after 21 months of intense collaboration and diligent work by the ECC Learning Pod. The ultimate goal of the ECC Learning Plan is to facilitate widespread eDiscovery competence for law firms, legal departments and law schools. While developing the Plan’s scenario-based training modules, the ECC Learning Pod members were inspired by professional conduct rules from the American Bar Association, State Bar of California and the U.K.’s Solicitors Regulation Authority.”
U.S. ECC Pod Member Janice Jaco is winner of ACEDS’ 2015 “e-Discovery Person of the Year” and eDiscovery Project Manager at Keesal, Young & Logan, a firm which won ACEDS’ first Law Firm E-Discovery Department of the Year award in April 2016. Jaco remarked: “The ECC Learning Plan identifies real-life tasks present in eDiscovery scenarios so lawyers can execute the tasks independently or with help from an eDiscovery expert. Legal professionals can develop their eDiscovery knowledge on-the-job, at their own pace.”
U.K. ECC Pod Member Andrew Haslam, eDisclosure expert and founder of Allvision Computing, explained: “In 2016, we are seeing groundbreaking changes in how solicitors in England and Wales are trained. To demonstrate competence, solicitors and their staff must show they have reflected on their training needs and recorded the thinking processes, actual learning and some self-assessment.”
The ECC Learning Plan is the 10th learning plan to be released by LTC4 to its members LTC4 is a non-profit membership organization that has brought together international legal IT leadership to develop scenario-based learning plans and certification for law firms, corporate legal departments and law schools in the U.S. and across the world.
