Capensys Director Janis Richman Shortlisted for ILTA Vendor Thought Leader of the Year
Global News

Capensys logoCapensys Ltd., experts in user adoption, change management and full-service training company for law firms today announced that Janis Richman, their Director of Consulting, has been shortlisted for the International Legal Technology Association's 2013 'Vendor Thought Leader of the Year' Award.

Ms. Richman was nominated for her vision in developing Capensys' Goal-Based Learning methodology. After working for law firms for over 25 years in roles that included Director of Training and Help Desk Manager, she experienced first-hand that traditional teaching methods were just not effective. Users were not retaining critical information and attorneys were notoriously difficult to get into training.  Janis spent 9 years as a user experience designer and became an advocate of user-centered systems design.  She felt that if systems could be designed with a goal-based approach, they could certainly be trained using the same techniques. She recognized that when she targeted training to user needs, when training curriculum was based on workflow and scenarios rather than focusing on learning all of the features in a single application, the success was greatly enhanced.

Rachel Baiden, Training Manager at Squire Sanders LLP says the Goal based approach to training, “is spot on in terms of…truly understanding the challenges that users in law firms face. I whole heartedly support the methodology of providing training in context to users, their workflow and how they can use firm technology to support this. We provide real world scenarios to our users, we don't talk features and functions. This is key to the innovative way that Capensys consultants, products and training materials work, which is very refreshing”.

“I am honored to be recognized in this way. I have devoted many years to changing the paradigm of training by engaging firms in an ongoing discussion about how to best approach end user training,” says Ms. Richman. “Traditionally, training was packaged as one size fits all. With the Goal-Based approach, we look at the individual -- their goals and workflows, what they need to know, and their learning styles. By creating learning profiles and targeted learning objectives, relevant, blended curriculum and delivery is ensured. This greatly enhances the success of a program.”

The final winner will be announced during ILTA's Fourth Annual Distinguished Peer Awards held on August 21, 2013 at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas, during ILTA's Annual Conference. This event recognizes innovation and success within Legal Technology and Law Firms from around the globe.
