Global News

GLH logoThe Global Legal Hackathon today announced a worldwide collaboration with She Breaks the Law, RSG Consulting, and global law firm BCLP to launch the GLH Inclusivity Challenge during the 2020 Global Legal Hackathon, which will be held between March 6-8 in more than 50 cities and 25 countries around the world.

The GLH Inclusivity Challenge was created to coincide with International Women’s Day and inspire hundreds of teams of legal industry innovators to develop new solutions to increase equity, diversity, and inclusion in the world’s legal industry.

Now in its third year, the Global Legal Hackathon is the largest legal technology innovation event in the world. The GLH brings together thousands of participants from every background and geography for a weekend (March 6-8) to get hands-on experience with the process of legal technology innovation, to invent new legal technology, and to improve the world’s legal industry.

This year, the GLH weekend coincides with International Women’s Day (March 8). In honor of this confluence of events and in recognition of the importance of increasing involvement and leadership of women and diverse individuals in the world’s legal industry, the Global Legal Hackathon, RSG Consulting, She Breaks the Law, and BCLP worked together to create the GLH Inclusivity Challenge:

“Participants and teams around the world, in every Global Legal Hackathon city, are challenged to invent new ways to increase equity, diversity, and inclusion in the legal industry.”

At the conclusion of GLH weekend, a local winner of the GLH Inclusivity Challenge will be selected by each city and will progress to a global semi-final. Finalists will be invited to the GLH Finals & Gala, to be held in London in mid-May. The winner of the GLH Inclusivity Challenge will be invited to present its solution during a diversity and inclusion summit that BCLP is planning to host in September, where leading figures from the industry will be asked to commit to ensuring the idea is brought to life and scaled up to deliver a lasting impact on the legal industry as a whole.

“The Global Legal Hackathon is remarkable for the fact that it is a global technology event that is majority women-led around the world,” explained Kearra Markowich, Executive Director of the Global Legal Hackathon. “Women lead the event in Brazil, Israel, Romania, Singapore, the United States, and many other countries. On the occasion of International Women’s Day overlapping with the Global Legal Hackathon, we are thrilled to be joined by women-owned RSG Consulting, She Breaks the Law, and the diversity and inclusion team of BCLP to challenge the world to invent new and novel approaches to increasing equity, diversity, and inclusion in the legal industry.”

Lisa Mayhew, Co- Chair of BCLP, said: “Inclusion, diversity and collaboration are core elements of our firm’s culture and key to driving innovation.  Introducing inclusivity as a key component of the world’s largest legal technology innovation event has fantastic potential to develop new solutions to help our industry drive real change. We want to challenge everyone in the legal industry – including clients, other law firms and suppliers – to join us in participating in finding ways to increase equity, diversity and inclusion in our sector.”

Already a number of organisations have agreed to support the challenge, with Aviva and MUFG all signed up to be involved, and others are now being asked to join them.

Mădălina Hristescu, Founder & Managing Partner at Hristescu & Partners and the leader of the GLH in Romania, commented, “It is only when we are inclusive that we become fully aware of the people's needs. We make it our mission to invest in sustainable development of the industry, and this starts with the people.”

There is no cost to participate in the Global Legal Hackathon or the GLH Inclusivity Challenge. Organizations around the world are challenged to send their best and brightest to the GLH hackathon weekend to collaborate with like-minded innovators all over the world to solve the greatest challenges facing the world’s legal industry.
