RenewData, a legal consulting and technology company with solutions that address the full spectrum of the Electronic Discovery Reference Model (EDRM), today announced that it has been awarded patent number US 8,738,668 for a system and method for creating a deduplicated data set. This is the company’s fourth patent awarded in less than a year.

Highly applicable to information management, document review and tape processing, the patent covers a proprietary method of high-speed deduplication and conversion for extremely large volumes of data. When paired with the company’s proven ability to rapidly restore large volumes of backup tapes, it results in a complete and accelerated solution for restoring, targeting and deduplicating large backup tape inventories. This allows corporate law departments to reduce or eliminate the expensive storage of backup media while single-instancing their email footprint.

The patented method and system are not just tied to tapes as RenewData also leverages them within its standard eDiscovery workflow. As a result, in-house counsel can reduce the volume and cost of document review while maximizing the ability to meet tight deadlines.

“The volume of data generated from corporations continues to expand quickly – especially on the email front. However, with email there is also a high degree of duplicative data. This patent demonstrates our continuing focus on innovation to help our clients reduce costs and risk, in this case by providing a proven, scalable solution to quickly eliminate duplicative email content while significantly reducing the impact on both labor and costs for law departments,” said Hemanth Salem, COO for RenewData.

In all, RenewData now holds 17 patents or patent applications that are focused on eDiscovery and information management. Recent patents awarded to RenewData include patent no. 8,150,827 B2 titled “Methods for enhancing efficiency and cost effectiveness of first pass review of documents,” patent no. US 8,375,008 BI for the company’s proprietary “Method and system for enterprise-wide retention of electronic data” and patent no. 11,349,570 for “System and method for management of retention periods for content in a computing system.”
